The Book of Boba Fett premiered on Disney Plus on Wednesday, with the first episode of the seven-part live-action Star Wars series premiering. It picks up after The Mandalorian's season 2 finale when Boba Fett and his super-best buddy Fennec Shand (Tempura Morrison and Ming-Na Wen) took over the late criminal lord Jabba the Hutt's castle using their most marketable ability — violence.
After surviving his confrontation with the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi, Boba was returned to the Star Wars world in the Mandalorian season 2 opening in 2020. He rescued a gravely injured Fennec before chasing down Mando and regaining his armor in spectacular fashion.
A clone bounty hunter took over Jabba's area and set up his new underworld empire roughly five years after Return of the Jedi, with his famous appearance restored. Let's go over all of the SPOILER information from the first episode.
Survival in the sands
In flashbacks to Return of the Jedi, which he dreams about while napping in healing bacta fluid, the bulk of this episode is devoted to detailing just how Boba survived his plunge into the Sarlacc.
He utilized his flamethrower and digging talents to get out of the Sarlacc's disgusting guts, but his armor was stolen by a gang of cheeky Jawas, and he was kidnapped by merciless Tusken Raiders. He eventually won the Tuskens' respect by slaying a fearsome sand creature after a botched escape attempt and being forced to dig for water.
This episode is simple and understated, but it's amazing to see a narrative line we've been anticipating since Boba plunged into the Sarlacc in the 1983 film come to life.
Since we first meet Boba in The Mandalorian wearing Tusken-style robes and carrying their weapons, it's plausible he continued to live among them or at least dressed like them while hanging out in the desert.
Seizing Jabba's territory
Boba and Fennec are currently attempting to take over Jabba's empire after killing Bib Fortuna (Boba's title is "Daimyo"). The Mayor of Mos Espa, in particular, appears to be causing problems: he refuses to come to the palace, refuses to pay his dues, and even wants payment from Boba.
As he walks away, the mayor's Twi'lek majordomo adds, "I wouldn't be shocked if you get another delegation in the near future."
Garsa Fwip (Jennifer Beals from Flashdance) makes things easier by having a fine cantina, paying tribute without hesitation, and flirting with Boba (who, to be honest, is far more appealing than Jabba or Bib Fortuna). Her servers must have known he was approaching because they swiftly load his helmet with credits.
His choice to spare the Gamorreans appears to have been the right one, as they save him and Fennec from assassins and faithfully guide him back to the bacta tank.
Assassination attempt
The "Night Wind Assassins" who assault Boba and Fennec are credited as such, yet this isn't a gang that has ever appeared in Star Wars. It's also unknown who dispatched them.
The most apparent possibility, based on what we've seen, is Mos Espa's invisible mayor. Others, on the other hand, may take a shot at Tatooine's new criminal leader, and Boba has definitely earned many enemies throughout his bounty hunting career.
We'll hopefully discover more in the following episode because Fennec grabbed one alive. Unless they're part of one of those cult-like silent assassin gangs or those who prefer to die than speak.
Unknown injuries
Despite the fact that Boba is physically capable in both the flashbacks and the current day, he's sleeping in bacta fluid implies that he may be suffering from long-term damage from the Sarlacc's venomous secretions, Tusken Raiders' brutal treatment, or the sand creature's pounding.
In any case, his perceived reliance appears to be a weakness that his adversaries may exploit.
In Boba's flashbacks, the green "bacta effect" implies that the healing liquid is resurrecting these memories.
Observations, WTF questions, and Easter eggs
- Boba's digging his way out of the sand outside the Sarlacc is reminiscent of Patton Oswalt's famous Star Wars Filibuster in Packs and Recreation.
- The episode's opening dialogue - "Rodian is a character in the game Rodian. Do you want me to release you from your shackles?" - 9 minutes and 21 seconds into the video. Unfortunately, Rodian is a moron, and Boba's effort to flee is thwarted.
- The first locations Boba dreams of are Kamino, a watery planet where he and the Galactic Republic's clone army were cloned from Jango Fett, and Geonosis, a sandy world where Jango was beheaded by Jedi Master Mace Windu. Attack of the Clones featured these scenes.
- Cobb Vanth obtained Boba's armor from the Jawas during Chuck Wendig's Aftermath trilogy of books, and Cobb delivered it to Mando in the opening episode of Season 2 of The Mandalorian.
- The black robes of the Tusken Raiders are stunning. It's no surprise Boba has worn them for years.
- It would be lovely if droids dressed you in the morning.
- Robert Rodriguez plays Dokk Strasse, the Trandoshan who pays homage to Boba.
- In Return of the Jedi, 8D8, the white droid who greets visitors in Boba's royal room, was shown torturing a gonk droid. Matt Berry, from What We Do in the Shadows and The IT Crowd, provides his voice in this episode.
- Mos Espa is the name of the village where Anakin Skywalker lived when we first saw him in The Phantom Menace.
- It appears that Boba wasn't the only one who survived Jabba's sail barge. Max Rebo, who we last saw in Return of the Jedi, is the Ortolan (blue elephant-looking person) musician in the cantina. When Luke Skywalker and his companions began slaughtering Jabba's thugs, it's probable he and his other musicians took the lead.
- A swoop gang attacks a residence in the desert, but Boba, the Rodian, and the Tusken youngster aren't sure which group they belong to (they tag the house with a gang symbol). We'll almost certainly see them again.
