Barcelona is steadily regaining its footing, but Real Madrid still has the edge in terms of talent. That was the result of the first El Clasico of the calendar year, which saw Real Madrid triumph 3-2 in extra time in a Supercopa semifinal.
In extra time, substitute Federico Valverde scored the game-winner, finishing a dangerous breakaway to keep Madrid in the game. Real Madrid took two different leads during normal time thanks to superb goals from Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior, only for Barcelona to come back with a fortuitous Luuk de Jong deflection and an Ansu Fati header with seven minutes remaining.
Real Madrid will meet either Atletico Madrid or Athletic Bilbao in the Supercopa final on Sunday in Saudi Arabia, where the La Liga leaders will face either Atletico Madrid or Athletic Bilbao. The champion and runner-up of La Liga compete against the winner and runner-up of the Copa del Rey cup competition in the Spanish Supercopa.
Real Madrid has had a strong start to the season under manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Merengues are also in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 and the Copa del Rey Round of 16. They have a five-point advantage in La Liga and are 17 points clear of Barcelona. In the Supercopa final on Sunday, they'll be hoping to win their first trophy of the season.
Barcelona will depart Saudi Arabia pleased with their performance as they continue to improve under Xavi Hernandez. The squad showed grit in bouncing back, and as the minutes passed, it gained confidence. In the attack, Ousmane Dembele and Luuk de Jong made significant contributions, and Ansu Fati had another magical moment.
Ferran Torres earned his first start for Barcelona, although he had a quiet first half playing on the right-wing of a three-man attack. The Blaugrana welcomed back two key players: rising sensation Pedri, who had not played since September, and Ansu Fati, who had not played since November 6.
Barcelona's response to their Clasico defeat.
"We still exhibited a recent complex during the first 20 minutes, but we got rid of such complexes and competed," Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez remarked. "We're not that far off from the La Liga standings.
"It was ours. It was ours. It was a coin flip game, and the outcome was one way, but it could have been another. We're pleased with ourselves. We competed, and now we must continue on our current road.
"Despite the fact that the outcome is poor and we must return home, we do it with pride. The game was ours. I'm upset and irritated since we had a chance to win the game. However, we competed admirably and had a chance to proceed to the final. It's a shame."
In his postgame interview, Gerard Pique echoed his head coach's sentiments: "In terms of skill, I believe we performed admirably. We took chances. We chased down the game and took a lot of chances. We could have gotten back [to defend] if they had won the semifinal on a counterattack. They arrived in the box with numbers and scored the third goal. However, I am quite proud of the squad. We [Barcelona] can begin to win and fight for trophies if we continue to play like this."
Real Madrid's top goal scorer What Valverde witnessed from the opponents impressed him: "Even if the results haven't been there, they're still Barcelona. They're a strong club with talented players who have demonstrated a drive to win... In my perspective, we need to convert more of the opportunities that come our way. We could have ended the game a lot sooner. That's all part of the game, and it's something we can work on."
