Washington announces new team name: Washington Commanders

Commanders are the new name for the Washington Football Team.

On Wednesday, the group presented its new name and logo at a big event.

In a statement, co-owner and co-CEO Daniel Snyder stated, "As an organization, we are delighted to unite and rise together as one under our new identity while paying honor to our local heritage and what it means to represent the nation's capital." "As we begin our 90th season, it is critical that our organization and fans honor our previous traditions, history, legacy, and the greats who have come before us. While forging a route to a new age in Washington, we continue to revere and represent the Burgundy & Gold. Today may be the Washington Commanders' first day, but we are and always will be Washington."

After discarding its old nickname in the summer of 2020, the franchise has spent the last two seasons as the Washington Football Team. The Football Team removed its prior logo and stripes from its helmet, replacing it with gold numbers on the burgundy shell. The remainder of the outfit stayed unchanged, but the team's moniker was substituted on the chest with Washington.

The former logo was replaced by a stylized W. A new W will now take its place, one that is more in line with the company's new logo.

The new W is similar to the old one, but it has lines running across it to give it a beveled aspect that is also more symmetrical than the old one. The new logo is available in two colors: burgundy with a gold outline and gold with a burgundy outline. The former will be the primary logo for the team.
