Governor Greg Abbott stated at least 14 students and one teacher were slain in a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde County on Tuesday. Others were hurt as well.
The gunman is thought to have been killed by responding authorities, according to Abbott. According to Pete Arredondo, head of police for the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, the gunman acted alone.
The victims of the incident are being treated at two hospitals in the vicinity. The Texas Tribune reported that Uvalde Memorial Hospital had received 13 children and one adult from ambulances and buses. Two people died upon arrival at the hospital. Two of the youngsters have now been moved to San Antonio for treatment, with a third on the way.
Two victims of the gunshot are being treated at University Health in San Antonio. The 66-year-old mother is in serious condition, as is the 10-year-old kid.
Salvador Ramos, an 18-year-old Uvalde resident, was identified as the gunman by Abbott. According to the governor, the guy abandoned his truck and entered Robb Elementary with a handgun and maybe a rifle. According to Arredondo, the gunfire began around 11:32 a.m.
About 85 miles west of San Antonio is Uvalde.
According to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting.
Second, third, and fourth-grade children attend Robb Elementary. Parents have been given permission to pick up their children after being taken to the city's municipal center. After gunshots were fired in the vicinity earlier Tuesday, the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District put all of its schools on lockdown.
At this time, the Uvalde County Sheriff's Office and a Uvalde Police Department dispatcher indicated they couldn't provide any other information on the incident.
Since 2009, there have been eight shootings in Texas, each resulting in the death of at least four people. A teenager opened fire at Santa Fe High School in Houston in 2018, killing ten people and injuring 13.
Abbott will speak at the National Rifle Association's 2022 annual meeting on Friday with former President Donald Trump and U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.
