Nicole Eustace and Ada Ferrer, both of New York University, have been awarded the Pulitzer Prize in History for their respective publications, Covered with Night: A Story of Murder and Indigenous Justice in Early America (Liveright) by Eustace and Cuba: An American History by Ferrer (Scribner).

Covered with Night is a documentary about the 1722 murder of an Indigenous hunter in Conestoga, Pennsylvania, by two white fur traders, whereas Cuba: An American Story offers a thorough history of Cuba's complicated relations with the United States.

"With Covered With Night, Eustace takes us deep into the cultural worlds and worldviews of early 18th-century Susquehanna Valley native peoples," said Pulitzer Board member and Harvard University professor Tommie Shelby. "We discover amazing research expertise, notably with the delicate use of indigenous languages, riveting storytelling, and graceful writing, in an investigation of a clash between indigenous peoples' concepts of justice and English law utilized by colonial settlers."

"Ada Ferrer, a famous Cuban historian, gives a brief yet comprehensive history of US-Cuba ties from the perspective of the island and its people," Shelby continues. "It's chock-full of remarkable anecdotes, starting with the fact that Christopher Columbus landed on the island, not the mainland, as is commonly supposed." Slavery and slave revolt, imperialism, revolution, the Cold War, land and labor exploitation, and the fight for national self-determination are all effortlessly blended into a gripping, fast-paced, and colorful tale."

Eustace and Ferrer are professors in NYU's Department of History.
