International Day of Tropics 2022: Significance of the day and why it is celebrated?

The 29th of June is designated as International Day of the Tropics, which raises awareness of the importance of tropical regions and the issues they confront in terms of the environment and the economy.

The International Day of the Tropics in 2022 will further encourage discussion of the tropics, which are the areas around the equator in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres that lay between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.

The direct sunlight, mild temperatures, and plentiful rainfall in the tropics combine to create a humid environment. This day also serves to highlight the fact that this belt is home to 80% of the planet's biodiversity and 40% of its inhabitants.

International Day of the Tropics 2022: Why Tropical Day is observed on 29th June?

On June 29, 2014, the James Crook University of Australia and 11 other research institutes submitted the First State of the Tropics Report. In order to determine if conditions in the tropics are getting better, the report examined a range of environmental, economic, and social concerns.

The study on the Tropics also predicted that by 2050, the percentage of people living in the tropics will increase from 40% to almost 50%.

The State of the Tropics report also highlighted the effects of economic growth on the environment, including an increase in deforestation, a rise in the number of terrestrial species in danger of extinction, and a decrease in the area covered by mangrove forests, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the coastline.

The International Day of the Tropics was established on June 29 as a result of the United Nations General Assembly taking note of this report and adopting the resolution on June 14, 2016.

International Day of the Tropics 2022: What are the Tropical Regions?

The Tropics of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere and the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere define the tropics of the region of the Earth that surrounds the Equator in terms of latitude.

In terms of climate, the tropics see more direct sunshine than the rest of the planet, which results in these regions being hotter and wetter on average since they are less influenced by solar factors. Sometimes, rather than referring to the actual geographical zone, the phrase "tropical" is used to describe this type of climate in the region.

International Day of the Tropics 2022: Significance

This day aids in drawing attention to the numerous difficulties that the countries in the tropics of the Earth confront, as well as the broad implications of the pressing problems. The yearly celebration emphasizes how important tropical countries are to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.
