The death of FIU linebacker Luke Knox, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 22, has shocked the collegiate football community, the school said.
Ole Miss was where Knox started his collegiate football career. He made a total of 10 tackles, two pass breakups, and one fumble recovery as a rookie.
After playing linebacker for two seasons, Knox switched to tight end before playing linebacker again in the 2021 football season.
During the offseason of 2022, Knox moved from Ole Miss to Florida International.
Knox was honored by FIU's head coach Mike MacIntyre in a statement.
Words are inadequate to convey the deep sadness we feel over the loss of Luke Knox, our comrade, and friend, MacIntyre said.
"Coaching Luke at Ole Miss and FIU was a privilege for me. His real love for his family and teammates is something I will never forget, even though I much respected his enthusiasm for football. He had a unique talent for putting everyone around him at ease and in control."
Dawson Knox, a tight end for the Buffalo Bills, was Knox's younger brother.
Sean McDermott, the head coach of the Bills, paid respect to the Knox family by saying, "Our thoughts are with Dawson and his family during this difficult time. When it comes to helping him and his family, we are right there with him. We adore him and stand behind him."
No immediate cause of death was given.
