Chloë Grace Moretz Reveals Her Dad Died During Pandemic, Talks Their 'Very Tumultuous' Relationship

Chloe Grace Moretz is talking openly about losing her father.

The 25-year-old actress says in a recent interview with Hunger magazine that she "lost my father during the epidemic."

Not because of COVID-related problems, but because there was a lot of change at a moment of great transformation, Chlo noted. "Following that, I had to travel to London to begin filming [The Peripheral]. And in many respects, I believe that starting to work again was an excellent choice."

The actress's representative did not immediately answer PEOPLE's request for comment, but her father, Dr. McCoy "Mac" Moretz, was 64 years old when he passed away on March 10, 2021, "after a brief illness," according to his obituary.

According to the obituary, Dr. Moretz created F.A.C.E. of Beverly Hills and was the father of six children, including Chlo and Kathleen, a daughter who survived her father. He was also a facial plastic surgeon.

Acting has "always been used as a sort of therapy," Chlo said in an interview with Hunger, adding that doing so for her new Amazon series The Peripheral "was beautiful and extremely restorative."

We ended up filming in Asheville, which is around 15 to 20 miles from where her father was born and reared, she said, adding that it was ironic given that her father and that side of her family are all from North Carolina.

"This lovely full-circle moment," the actress said, "where, by the time we got to that point, it was at the very end of production and there was this beautiful release."

Because of the rocky nature of her connection with her father, she stated, "by the time that release happened, it was just incredibly profound." "It would be an understatement to say that these last two years have been revolutionary. I've changed a lot from the girl I was. I suddenly feel feminine."

Chlo talked about her father abandoning her family when she was 12 years old in an interview with Glamour back in 2016. She described it as "a very awful situation" at the time.

Our family could have been shaken and badly affected, but instead, she remarked, we became much closer. "My siblings stepped into the fatherly duties and put me in a cocoon where I could live in a world that wasn't jaded and destroyed," the author writes.

Although she had previously stated that she didn't believe she would ever "really find a way to forgive" her father because "the things that he did are unforgivable," she later clarified that her "forgiveness is that I'm enjoying my life."

The Kick-Ass actress also discussed with PEOPLE earlier that year how her "brothers truly shielded" her after seeing her mother's fight with cancer when she was just 10 years old and going through her parent's divorce as a youngster.

Growing up, they created a wonderful bubble for me, Chlo said. Through everything, they genuinely held my hand. I wouldn't truly know who I am now without them.
