Five years have passed since Paramore last put out music as a unit, but that all changed suddenly.
The Hayley Williams, Zac Farro, and Taylor York trio announced their comeback on Wednesday (Sept. 28) by releasing a brand-new song called "This is Why" along with a music video that was filmed by Brendan Yates. Williams says in the happy chorus, "This is why I don't leave the home / You say the coast is clear / But you won't catch me out / Oh, why? / This is why."
The band's sixth studio album, This Is Why, is scheduled for release on February 10, 2023, via Atlantic Records, and features the new single as its title track.
The very last song we composed for the record was titled "This Is Why." To be completely honest, I was sick of writing words, but Taylor persuaded Zac and me to work on this final concept, Williams stated in a news statement about the song. "What came out of it was the album's title tune. It encapsulates the wide range of absurd feelings, the ups, and downs of living in 2022, and having even just survived the previous three or four years. You'd think that people would have discovered deep down inside themselves to be nicer or more compassionate following a pandemic of f—ing biblical proportions and the approaching catastrophe of a dying world.
After Laughter, the band's most recent album was published in 2017. It includes songs like "Hard Times" and "Rose-Colored Boy." Since then, Farro has released a number of solo projects under the name HalfNoise, while Williams released her own solo album, Petals for Armor, in 2020. Zane Lowe of Apple Music 1 recently interviewed Williams on the band's re-formation, and Williams said, "I think it was just incredibly essential for us to have a minute apart from the identity being wrapped up with Paramore. And it goes without saying that the internet has always been like the Wild West, only crazier in recent years. Therefore, today more than ever, it's important to safeguard your energy.
At the end of the day, it's a job, but it's the finest job you could possibly have, continued Farro. But it's up to you to decide whether to get up, dress in your suit, and do it correctly. Therefore, I believe that everyone just processes information in their own unique method in order to reach and perform this task as well as possible. So whether it's temporarily putting oneself aside, losing all sense of identity, or whatever it is, it only improves Paramore because when you return, you're that much more... "' I'm really happy I had some time off,' because I'm ready to come back and crush this now.
