Chiefs acquiring WR Kadarius Toney from Giants in trade

Midway through his second NFL season, Kadarius Toney has settled into a new place.

According to a source, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero said on Thursday that the New York Giants are dealing the quick wide receiver to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2023 third-round compensatory selection and a 2023 sixth-round pick. The third-round pick is not contingent, Pelissero noted. The league transaction wire reported that the deal was finalized Thursday afternoon.

Toney, a first-round selection by the Giants in 2021, saw his share of setbacks during his brief stay in New York. The 23-year-career old's has only seen him play in 12 games due to injuries, and a hamstring problem that has persisted since Week 2 of this season has kept Toney off the field. Due to his poor stay in New York, Toney has been the focus of trade speculations prior to the 2022 season.

Toney has so far received 41 passes for 420 yards, with the majority of his gains coming in a 2021 Week 5 matchup against the Cowboys when he hauled in 10 passes for 189 yards. Toney was disqualified for throwing a punch late in the rout defeat, ending his career-best performance.

Brian Daboll, the new Giants coach, hasn't had enough opportunities to maximize Toney's talent since he was restricting the wideout's snaps in two games this year and only allowing him to touch the ball on planned sweeps.

Coach Brian Daboll explained the trade of Toney to the media on Thursday, saying, "We just decided it was for the benefit of the club."

When in good health, Toney has displayed the speed and dexterity he frequently displayed when a student at the University of Florida. Toney's deep-threat ability and his speed threat out of the backfield will be utilized by Kansas City's high-flying attack now that they have an explosive playmaker who can line up wherever on the field.

Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, obviously likes his newest tool:

The Chiefs convert one of their two compensatory selections (plus a sixth-rounder) into a former first-round pick with potential after losing Ryan Poles to the Bears' general manager position.

In an offense that overhauled its receiving group this summer in the wake of the Tyreek Hill deal, Kansas City's newest reclamation project ought to keep things interesting. The Chiefs now lead the NFL in both points scored per game (31.9) and yards per game (403.3) as well as passing yards per game (296.0).

Given his physical attributes and elusiveness in space, Toney may very well be Hill 2.0. Toney will need to regain his full health before we see how Andy Reid and his staff use their newest offensive threat, but the Chiefs have the ideal brains on the sidelines to get him there.
