S.Korean envoy to visit the US, discuss N. Korea’s nuke threat

Wednesday, October 3 (IANS): This week, the newly appointed South Korean ambassador for North Korean human rights will go to the United States for the first time, according to authorities.

During her four-day trip beginning on Wednesday, Lee Shin-hwa intends to meet with representatives of the State Department, the White House, as well as academics and activists, in Washington, D.C., to discuss a number of open topics, including Pyongyang's nuclear threat and missile provocations.

In July, Lee, a professor of political science at Korea University, was chosen to take over as the next ambassador, replacing a position that had been unfilled since September 2017.

Since the U.N. Commission of Inquiry released a report in 2014 following a year-long investigation, declaring that North Korean officials are accountable for "widespread, systematic, and severe" abuses of human rights, North Korea's record on human rights has attracted more international attention.

North Korea has long been charged with serious violations of human rights, including torturing prisoners of conscience and carrying out public executions.

Nevertheless, North Korea has reacted angrily to foreign criticism, branding it a U.S.-led effort to overthrow its government.
