Mike Leach, the head coach of Mississippi State, is in critical condition after being taken to the hospital on Sunday due to a health issue that happened at his house.

Leach was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, claims a university statement. The institution gave no other details, although the Clarion Ledger reported on Monday that Leach had a severe heart attack.

From the Clarion Ledger:

According to multiple sources, Leach, 61, collapsed at his home in Starkville but did not receive medical attention for between 10 to 15 minutes. EMTs used a defibrillator machine and delivered multiple shocks to restore normal heart rhythm.

After he was stabilized at Oktibbeha County Hospital, he was transported by helicopter to UMMC. Sources said two of four [of] his children are already in Jackson with the other two en route.

It appears, according to sources, that Leach may have suffered seizures with the possibility of brain damage. Sources said the situation is dire.

Leach, 61, admitted to having pneumonia throughout the regular season but was "doing better" in an interview with ESPN following the end of the regular season.

Leach had a "personal health concern," according to Mississippi State on Sunday. MSU reported on Monday that Leach's relatives are by his side in the hospital.

According to a statement from MSU, "Mike's family is with him and appreciates the outpouring of love and support for the coach, but also wishes that their family's privacy be respected at this time." There isn't much information on Coach Leach's condition that MSU is aware of, so the school won't say anything further at this time.

Leach is in his third year as the head coach of Mississippi State. In that time, he has a 19-17 record, including an 8-4 record this year.

Leach spent 10 years at Texas Tech and 8 seasons as the head coach there before moving to Starkville. Leach has a 158-107 overall record while serving as head coach.

Zach Arnett, the MSU defensive coordinator, has been given control of the football team "until Coach Leach returns," according to the university. MSU will take on Illinois in the ReliaQuest Bowl on January 2.
