The South Korean military was forced to send out fighter planes and assault helicopters in response to intrusion by North Korean drones.
the military failed to fire down on them, resulting in an intense backlash against the action taken and an apology.
After the military failed to shoot down five North Korean drones that crossed the border, President Yoon Suk-yeol stated on Thursday that South Korea must improve its readiness to respond to airspace invasions.
The South Korean military sent out fighter aircraft and assault helicopters in response to the drone invasion on Monday, one of which came dangerously near Seoul, the capital.
The military attempted to fire down the North Korean drones for five hours, but they were unsuccessful. This led to significant condemnation of the military's actions and an apology from the military.
The episode, according to President Yoon, was "intolerable," and the South should make sure Pyongyang "realizes that provocations are always faced with heavy repercussions," he said.
During a visit to the state-run Agency for Defense Development, he stated that "we need to create enormously superior war preparations if we are to attain peace."
In order to promptly correct any shortcomings, the whole response mechanism against all flying objects that violate our airspace, in addition to drones, has to be reviewed.
Yoon criticized the military's response to the event earlier this week and ordered an expedited creation of a drone unit that would include cutting-edge stealth models to conduct surveillance on Pyongyang's critical military installations.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff of the South said on Thursday that drone-specific training exercises will be held.
Following a recent spate of nuclear tests by the North that violated sanctions, Pyongyang's drones entered the South's airspace for the first time in five years.
This year, North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, declared his nation to be an "irreversible" nuclear state and stated that he intended North Korea to have the most potent nuclear arsenal in the world.
Yoon stated that Seoul's reactions to Pyongyang's upcoming provocations will not be impacted by the North's nuclear weapons.
"We should send a clear warning to those who are provocative, regardless of whether the opponent has nuclear weapons or weapons of mass devastation," Yoon added.
