Coach Chris Beard of the Texas men's basketball team was taken into custody on a felony domestic abuse accusation early on Monday.
According to Kristen Dark, senior public information officer for the Travis County Sheriff's Office, 49-year-old Beard is presently going through the booking procedure at the county jail.
Dark said to ESPN, "He is in our possession. "I can attest that he is the individual we are scheduling,"
Police in Austin, Texas, detained Beard and he was charged with third-degree "assault of a family/household member, restrict breath circulation," or strangling, at 4:18 a.m.
Soon after midnight on Monday, according to Austin police and ESPN, officers were sent to the 1900 block of Vista Lane in response to a "disturbance hotshot" report. A "hotshot" call is described as "incidents which are in progress constitute an imminent threat to life and/or public safety.... These calls are sent promptly" on the website of the Austin Police Department.
The Austin American-Statesman was informed by Perry Minton, Beard's attorney, that Beard "is 100% innocent of these claims."
Minton told the newspaper that the arrest of the man was inappropriate. "The plaintiff demands his immediate release and the cancellation of all charges. It is simply incomprehensible."
In a statement, the institution claimed: "The University is aware of Chris Beard's predicament. We are still gathering data and keeping an eye on the legal procedure."
Texas is 7-1 and off to its finest start in years; the Longhorns are placed seventh overall in the Associated Press poll. On Monday night, Rice will visit the Longhorns.
Beard departed Texas Tech to accept what he called his "dream job" at Texas in 2021 while still in his second season with the Longhorns.
