LVE on Track to Return for Playoffs: 'I'm Ready'

The Dallas Cowboys' playoff positioning cannot get much worse this week; they are certain to receive at least the No. 5 seed. Nevertheless, they enter the regular-season finale against the Washington Commanders with a chance to win the NFC East and perhaps even more. Leighton Vander Esch, though, will be ready with helmets in hand wherever they land.

After sustaining a pinched nerve in his neck and shoulder during the overtime defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars on December 18, the former Pro Bowl linebacker will likely miss the next game at FedEx Stadium, marking his second consecutive absence.

When I spoke with him on Monday, his tone was one of famine. He is anticipated to return when the playoffs begin.

I feel terrific, I'll repeat it a hundred times, Vander Esch stated. "We have to go win this game, too, so I'm just focusing on helping the team this week with this game and getting everyone locked in and prepared — get our game plan going. We're not removing any pressure from the accelerator."

The former All-Pro has been outstanding for the Cowboys this year, almost matching his dominant rookie performance from 2018 when his 140 combined tackles (a team-high) won him league-wide recognition, including selection to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.

Despite missing the previous two games, Vander Esch is only safety Donovan Wilson's second-best replacement in that category in 2022, and his absence has made his impact that much more apparent. Vander Esch was essential to the run defense's resiliency and played sideline to sideline in defense against screen and bubble passes.

However, the Wolf Hunter is on pace to don the uniform for the competition, and not a minute too soon, with the playoffs scheduled to begin soon.

Simply exercising and keeping in condition for the playoffs, according to Vander Esch. "[Keeping] my body in playing condition and preparing to return to the field and make this [playoff] run."
