Where Were Outer Banks Season 3 Filmed?

While the third season of OBX gives the impression that it is set all over the world (including Venezuela, Basseterre in St. Kitts, and the Guadeloupe Islands), it was really recorded in Barbados and Charleston, South Carolina.

From the allegedly desolate island known as Poguelandia to street scenes in Bridgetown, the port city and capital of the island nation, Barbados serves as the background for everything. While it hasn't been proven, it appears that St. John Parish Church represents the church that plays a significant part in the events that take place on the island. The lovely, Gothic-style building was initially constructed around 1645. According to Visit Barbados, it has been destroyed by a hurricane and rebuilt more than once since it first existed. The current structure has been standing since 1836.

The show has previously used Barbados as a location for filming. In the second season, the Caribbean island—along with a property you can really rent there—was utilized to represent the Camerons' Bahamas getaway.

The production was filmed in Charleston, South Carolina, despite the Outer Banks really being off the coast of North Carolina. The Summer I Got Beautiful and Dawson's Creek were both produced in Wilmington, North Carolina, thus Outer Banks co-creator Jonas Pate first envisioned filming the series there. Due to a 2016 anti-LGBTQ bathroom bill that made it illegal in North Carolina to use a restroom that does not correspond with the sex you were given at birth, the production decided to film in South Carolina instead. In 2017, a portion of the statute was repealed. 2019 saw a settlement that declared nobody could be stopped from using the restroom that corresponds to their gender identification.

Several Charleston locales from past seasons are visible in South Carolina, including the Camerons' Tanneyhill house, which was photographed near the storied Lowndes Grove. Several of our favorite characters from the fictitious Outer Banks are also transported to Charleston, notably the Charleston Museum, in this season's plot. The Charleston Museum's actual exterior resembles the one seen in the show quite a bit.

Any of the production's primary filming sites are deserving of a position on your travel wish list, whether you're longing for an island getaway (we recommend staying at the Hilton Barbados Resort that several of the OBX actors visited) or seeking a stateside trip in Charleston.
