With 265,000 active players at the time of writing, Sons Of The Forest is the third-most popular game on Steam. That's decent for a game launched over three hours ago. In fact, it's so well-liked that it may have brought down Steam.
Sons Of The Forest was supposed to premiere this evening at 5 PM GMT, but it started a bit later. Instead, it was released during an unusual Steam outage. At Downdetector, you may notice an increase in reported outages. It's possible that 265,000 players simultaneously attempting to download and begin playing a new game was enough to cause Valve's servers to crash.
If you need to become more familiar, Sons Of The Forest is a first-person survival game and a sequel to The Forest. Similar to its predecessor, it centers on surviving in a jungle setting, maybe with the help of friends, as semi-naked cannibals try to obstruct your progress.
Sons Of The Forest, which had been originally planned to release this year as a complete game, has now followed in the footsteps of its predecessors and released as an Early Access title.
It's wonderful that what is essentially an independent game has launched to such enormous early success, but we'll have a lot more to say about the glitzy survival sim in the coming days. If you want to play with the crowd, you can get it on Steam for £25/$30.
