GOP leader Mitch McConnell is hospitalized after fall, his spokesman says

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., speaks to reporters following a closed-door policy meeting, at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, March 7, 2023.

According to a spokeswoman, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell was receiving treatment at a nearby hospital after he collapsed at a hotel on Wednesday night.

According to his spokesperson, the Kentucky senator, 81, stumbled and fell at a hotel in Washington, D.C.

"This evening, while attending a private dinner at a nearby hotel, Leader McConnell fell." According to a statement issued early on Thursday by McConnell's spokesman Doug Andres. He is undergoing treatment at the hospital where he has been hospitalized.

There was no more information given on McConnell's condition.

Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, wished McConnell well in a tweet sent out early on Thursday.

McConnell has had polio all of his life, having been diagnosed before a vaccination was created. As an inspiration to end the illness globally in 2018, he cited his personal battle.

In a story from Roll Call, McConnell stated, "I believe it's underappreciated outside the public health sector exactly how much hard effort and ingenuity has to continue after a disease has slipped off the front pages. Without ongoing assistance, "progress might erode swiftly," he said.

McConnell was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984. He has led the Senate Republicans for the longest period of time.
