Hazmat Crew, Police, and Medics Responding To Another Train Derailment In Ohio

On Saturday afternoon, law enforcement personnel and other authorities responded to another railway incident in Ohio.

Deputies and medical personnel were rushed to the site in Springfield, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Office.

Scanner activity suggested that a hazmat crew was also sent, according to the local media.

One month before the train disaster in Springfield, a disastrous train accident occurred in East Palestine, on the other side of the state, which was brought on by an overheated wheel bearing on the 23rd of 149 rail cars. In an effort to avoid a large explosion from happening, local authorities initiated a controlled burn of the vinyl chloride that the train was delivering after evacuating all homes within one mile of the disaster.

PVC is made of vinyl chloride, a substance that is known to cause cancer in humans. Five railroad carriages released huge plumes of black smoke that were visible throughout eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

Nine of the roughly 50 chemicals that the EPA said were found on the derailed train, according to researchers from Texas A&M and Carnegie Mellon, have greater quantities than usual in East Palestine, they reported on Friday. According to a CDC report, they were particularly worried about elevated levels of acrolein, a chemical with a strong odor that is "extremely hazardous" when breathed.
