Las Vegas Raiders signing ex-Patriots WR Jakobi Meyers to three-year, $33 million deal

This summer, the Raiders, and Josh McDaniels will again shop on well-known free-agent streets.

According to a source cited by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Tuesday, wide receiver Jakobi Meyers has agreed to a three-year, $33 million contract with Las Vegas, including $21 million in guaranteed money.

Meyers will make $11 million in 2023, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero. His deal includes a $5.5 million roster bonus on the third day of the 2024 league year guaranteed for talent and injury.

This former Patriots player is the latest to sign with the Raiders under McDaniels' tutelage, after the signing of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on Monday. Meyers and Garoppolo never shared the field in New England, but each individually saw their careers flourish under McDaniels' play-calling.

The undrafted Meyers settled in with New England (while Raiders general manager David Ziegler was in the front office there) and has turned himself into one of the top slot receivers in the league. In 2021, he had career highs for catches (83) and receiving yards (833), and in 2022, he scored six touchdowns.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Meyers was also involved in one of the more peculiar plays in recent NFL history, a backward lateral by Meyers in the final seconds of the Patriots-Raiders game in Week 15 that resulted in a walk-off touchdown return by Chandler Jones. Obviously, this didn't deter McDaniels or the Raiders, though.

Nonetheless, the action raises concerns about the Raiders' intended usage of its receivers. One of the outside positions will be Davante Adams' starting position, and Meyers is expected to get a lot of action. Is Hunter Renfrow, who mostly plays slot receiver, certain of a spot? Another concern is if Mack Hollins, who played well down the stretch, will be able to go back to Las Vegas given Meyers' hiring.

The Patriots in New England are losing their three-year leading receiver as a result. Among the choices still available at receiver were DeVante Parker, Tyquan Thornton, Kendrick Bourne, Lynn Bowden Jr., and Tre Nixon. A free agent is Nelson Agholor.
