According to his family and the police, Bob Lee, a technology professional who established the mobile payment business Cash App and formerly worked at Square, passed away on Tuesday after being stabbed close to downtown San Francisco.
Around 2:35 a.m. on Tuesday, according to San Francisco police, officers responded to a stabbing report. The police discovered Robert Lee, 43, who appeared to have been stabbed. Police added that after being transferred to a hospital, he passed away from his wounds.
Police Chief Bill Scott said in a statement Wednesday night that the investigation is still in its early stages but that it was a terrible crime.
The police department's homicide detail is looking into the event, according to the department.
Bob Lee was the chief product officer for the cryptocurrency business MobileCoin. Prior to joining Block, he served as chief technology officer of Square, a financial technology start-up co-founded by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. Square is now known as Block.
Lee later developed the money-transfer service Cash App.
"Bobby was the sharpest guy I've ever known and worked harder than anyone. All those who knew him will miss him, his father Richard Lee posted to Facebook beside a news report about the stabbing. Thank you to everyone who offered their assistance.
According to Richard Lee's article, the father and son relocated from California to Miami in October. As Bob Lee's mother passed away in 2019, their bond got even closer. Why Lee had returned to the Bay Area was not immediately apparent.
Tim Oliver Lee posted on Facebook that he was "very saddened and disillusioned" to have lost his sibling. "He was actually the best among us. He was my childhood best friend, and I feel like a part of me has been lost."
Bob Lee "died away yesterday," according to Joshua Goldbard, founder and CEO of MobileCoin, in a statement released on Wednesday. Goldbard also lauded Lee's economic savvy. He did not say how Lee passed away.
"Bob was a powerhouse, a natural force. Bob was the real deal, according to Goldbard. He was created for the world that is currently under development. He had big goals as a child and brought to life anything he could have only dreamt.
Goldbard lauded Lee as a "brilliant" thinker with a "kaleidoscopic" intellect in a Twitter thread, saying that Lee was "like a brother to me."
The World Health Organization said in a statement that "Bob constructed a substantial chunk of the server for the WHO Covid-19 App," NBC News confirmed on Wednesday that Lee contributed his "help and knowledge" during the outbreak.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Lee also invested in Elon Musk's SpaceX business and other Internet companies, including the social audio app Clubhouse. On his LinkedIn and Twitter profiles, he went by the moniker "crazy bob."
The police chief, Scott, sent his sympathies to Lee's friends and family on Wednesday evening.
In the statement, Scott stressed that there was "no place in our city for this kind of horrific crime against anyone." "I want to reassure everyone that, like we attempt to do in every tragedy that occurs in our city, our investigators are working nonstop to make an arrest and deliver justice to Mr. Lee and his loved ones.
The tragic stabbing may draw even more attention to San Francisco's public safety concerns, as locals and business owners have grown increasingly alarmed by violent crimes and thefts. London Breed, the mayor, has vowed to toughen up on crime.
According to statistics published by the police department, San Francisco has had 12 homicides since the year's commencement. There were 10 homicides over the same time period the previous year.
His family, friends, and coworkers of Lee paid him tribute.
According to Krista Lee, her ex-husband was "everyone's greatest buddy" and "the most fantastic and gorgeous human being."
They had two kids: Scout, 14, and Damien, 17. Damien Lee described his father as an approachable man who was always willing to listen.
He was a very unique individual on this planet. That he departed us so soon breaks my heart, said Damien Lee in a statement.
Scout Lee expressed her "devastation that someone would be so heartless to take away my father's life" in a statement that her mother posted.
Anybody who knew him would agree that he was the best man and an even greater father. "They would always have some amazing anecdote to offer about their experiences with him," she said.
Later in the statement, she added, "He was not only my father; he was one of my greatest friends. I will eternally grieve my dad and be broken by his loss.
Jake Shields, a former MMA fighter, described him as a "true friend." Musk expressed his "great sorrow" at learning of Lee's passing in response to one of Shields' tweets.
On the social media site Nostr, Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter, referred to Lee's death as "heartbreaking." According to Dorsey, "Bob was crucial to Square and Cash App."
Lee's buddy Joshua Bloch recalled him as a charismatic individual who "always had a broad smile on his face" and "constantly lived life to the fullest." Lee worked with Bloch at Google in the late 2000s.
Bloch recalled Lee as a tech "autodidact" who could allegedly "accomplish anything he wanted" in a phone interview on Wednesday, adding, "I don't think he recognized how special he was."
People frequently compliment the deceased, but in this case, Bloch stated, "I would say the same things if he were still alive. He was extraordinary.
