One of the most anticipated attendees of the Met Gala has arrived.
Kim Kardashian arrived at the event on Monday sporting a piece of Schiaparelli Haute Couture created especially for her by Daniel Roseberry. The ensemble featured a blush satin corset molded underneath a draped skirt and top containing over 50,000 freshwater pearls and 16,000 crystals. According to Schiaparelli, each pearl strand was strung and draped over her body, taking a dozen artists more than 1,000 hours to complete. Kardashian added a choker, pearl drop earrings, ruffled sleeves that extended into a long train, and white shoes to the ensemble as accessories.
Kardashian discussed the idea for the bespoke outfit with Vogue's special reporter Derek Blasberg after walking the red carpet. She stated, "I wanted to feel glamorous," adding that, unlike other years when she felt under pressure to make a significant contribution. "All I wanted was to have fun. Before I came with my sisters, I took a shot.
The Met Gala, a yearly fund-raiser for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is held in conjunction with the opening of the museum's annual fashion exhibition, which this year is centered on Karl Lagerfeld. The collection, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," commemorates the late designer's life and illustrious work and includes more than 150 items, including drawings. Lagerfeld died away on February 19, 2019.
The phrase "In honor of Karl" appears in the dress code, and that was all Kim Kardashian needed to get started on this year's outfit: I desired pearls. Karl, what is more? I've always associated Chanel with its distinctive pearls. We desired to be covered in pearls.
Kardashian was soaking with sweat. As she moved from the Ritz hotel to the car to the carpet, she revealed that some of the real pearls were coming off the ensemble. North West, her renowned mother's daughter, who attended the event with them, "was putting them all in her purse," she claimed. I'm going to follow you around all night, too, Blasberg joked.
Kardashian was also questioned by Blasberg, a pun-loving journalist who called her "the most pearl-fact visitor" at this year's Met Gala and quipped that she had met Lagerfeld's adored cat Choupette. Kardashian claimed it was "a bit scared at first" but she warmed up after a while since "we spent some time together before this." We engaged in a love fest.
It was "very emotional" for her to be there because of the family's personal relationship with Lagerfeld, according to Kardashian, who later stopped for her closest friend La La Anthony, who was manning the live stream for Vogue. She said that Lagerfeld had photographed her very first fashion assignment and that he had also chosen Kendall Jenner for his runway shows when she initially began her modeling career. It's really unique, she added.
At the Met Gala, Kardashian has a history of being a show-stopper. The beaded Jean Louis illusion gown that Marilyn Monroe famously wore on May 19, 1962, when she sang "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden, caught people's attention last year. (The gown was on loan from Ripley's Believe it or Not, which caused a commotion.) She donned a body-covering black Balenciaga outfit in 2021. Other notable outfits include the custom Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci dress she wore in 2013 while pregnant, the chainmail Versace dress she wore in 2018, the off-the-shoulder Vivienne Westwood Couture dress in 2017, the sheer Roberto Cavalli gown with feather train in 2015, and the dress she wore in 2019 that was created for her by Thierry Mugler.
Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Anna Wintour, co-chairs of Vogue, are included on the Met Gala schedule.
