Usher and Keke Palmer are adding fuel to the controversy sparked by their widely shared dance performance in Las Vegas, as evidenced in a fresh music video accompanying Usher's track "Boyfriend."
The duo's dance routine to Usher's song "There Goes My Baby" during one of his Las Vegas residency shows created a buzz online, notably after Palmer's partner, Darius Jackson, openly criticized her choice of attire at the concert. Jackson publicly commented on Palmer's outfit, expressing his views on her being a mother and wearing revealing clothing.
Palmer chose to respond to the situation through the medium of a music video, which premiered on Usher's official YouTube channel on Wednesday. The video depicts Palmer getting ready for a night out at a Las Vegas casino. Adorned in an impressive ensemble, she sings along to Usher's 2001 hit "U Remind Me" while riding the elevator to the lobby. Here, she briefly locks eyes with Usher before fully embracing his distinctive style, donning an identical outfit to his and confidently dancing across the casino floor. The two take turns showcasing their impressive dance moves in sync.
Usher's lyrics in "Boyfriend" play into the video's narrative: "Somebody said that your boyfriend’s lookin’ for me, well, he should know I’m pretty easy to find. And Just look for me wherever he sees you."
The video concludes with Palmer waking up in her hotel room, realizing the entire sequence was a dream, and that she missed out on the night's festivities. With a wink at the camera, she remarks, "I’m so tired... I am a mother, after all."
Usher! I remember when I was 12 and auditioned for “In The Mix” 🤣 You have been killing it all my life. As a true lover of the arts, your talent and craftsmanship are a rare combination that I aspire to achieve as a performer. You are a living legend who is worthy of awe! Palmer expressed her sentiments towards Usher in a social media post promoting the video. She reminisced about auditioning for "In The Mix" at the age of 12 and praised Usher's enduring impact on her life. She hailed Usher as a legendary figure, celebrating his unparalleled talent and artistry, which she aspires to emulate as a performer.
This music video serves as Palmer's first public response to the controversy that emerged following Jackson's July post. However, Palmer did share some words of wisdom for new mothers in a prior interview with the publication, The Cut. She encouraged new moms to embrace themselves and their newfound roles, emphasizing the profound love between a mother and her child.
